Thames hit eight home runs in two series against the Reds to cement his place in history. Naturally, his month was so good that people are questioning whether he’s using performance-enhancing drugs. His response to the newfound attention was pretty great:
“This whole thing is surprising me as well. I really have no goals for this year. I’m not trying to break any records, or set anything. I just want to apply what I learned in Korea to see how it would fare here. I’m shocked at the results, but I’m just here to play ball and do my best to stay healthy and stretch as much as I can. So if people keep thinking I’m on stuff I’ll be here every day — I have lots of blood and urine.”
Thames began his MLB career in 2011 with unsuccessful stints with the Blue Jays and Mariners before heading to Korea to continue his career. He spent three seasons with the NC Dinos, where he was a two-time Golden Glove Award winner and was the league’s home run leader in 2016.
Now he’s tearing up baseball and is one of the best stories of the season. If Thames keeps it up, he’ll need all that blood and urine to satisfy the haters.
