12-year-old Maggie Sheridan hit the spelling bee equivalent of a buzzer beater on Thursday when he stepped to the mic and got given the word “whirlicote,” which means “a heavy and luxurious carriage.”
This spelling bee equivalent of a buzzer beater was amazing

Maggie had absolutely no clue what the word was, using every bit of her two minutes just to get the pronunciation correct. When the clock hit 30 seconds she was no longer able to receive answers to questions, and despite trying to hear “whirlicote” one last time she ended just having to go for it.
Those final seconds are so friggin’ tense. She makes it halfway through the word before pausing, and for a second you think she’s not going to finish the word. Finally she spits out the last letters and her reaction after being told it was correct was everything.
One of the coolest moments of the bee, hands down.
