Nine innings weren’t enough to settle a Thursday night game between the Delmarva Shorebirds and Lexington Legends. Neither were 12 innings, 15 or even 20. Now, thanks to storms, the game will resume Friday night beginning at the top of the 21st inning.
Marathon minor league game will resume after storms, in the top of the 21st inning
It could be the longest game in baseball history.

The game officially began at 7:04 p.m., and had to be called off due to storms at 1:07 a.m. after almost six hours of play. It seemed at first like it might be an early night for fans, but the Shorebirds scored in the bottom of the ninth to set up the ensuing marathon of futility.
No matter what happens from this point it will be the all-time record for the longest game in Shorebirds history. There’s also a slim chance it could challenge the all-time record for longest game, which was between the Pawtucket Red Sox and Rochester Red Wings in 1981. That game took 33 innings and featured Cal Ripkin Jr. in the Red Wings lineup.
Fans who purchased a ticket to the game on Thursday will have a chance to re-enter starting at 5 p.m. on Friday. The game is set to continue at 6 p.m. and we’ll see how long this one lasts.
