Nintendo unveiled a first look at Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at their ‘Nintendo Direct’ as part of the E3 conference in Los Angeles, and it’s promising to be the biggest iteration of the game yet.
Everything we know about ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’
EVERY. CHARACTER. EVER.

Which characters are in the game?
The “ultimate” in the game name is a hint here. Nintendo is adding every character that has ever appeared in the series, including DLC characters from past games and one-off fighters who only made one appearance in the series.
Who is new?
Masahiro Sakurai, director of the Super Smash Bros. series said his team was focusing more on integrating the 60-plus characters in the game than adding anyone new, but did unveil two new fighters joining the roster.
- Inklings: Both the boy, and girl inklings from Splatoon are joining the game. Their core mechanic centers on spraying opposing fighters with ink in order to do additional damage to them. Much like in Splatoon, the ink can run out — prompting players to refill mid-battle by blocking and ducking at the same time.
- Ridley: The iconic boss from the Metroid games is making her first appearance as a playable character in Smash as well. In the show we saw a really devastating sliding throw attack, which looks like it could be devastating in one-on-one fights.
What did Nintendo show?
Over 25 minutes of Nintendo’s hour long conference showcased in-depth changes featured in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. These ranged from special attacks, to minute changes that are only perceivable to long-time Smash players.
For the rest of us we know that Daisy will be playable is an alternate skin for Peach that Nintendo are calling “echo costumes.” They’re palette swaps for previously existing characters, with additional tweaks to special moves.
Nintendo also announced that GameCube controllers will work with the game, allowing players to keep their preferred control method.
How are the pros reacting?
What is the release date?
