Manager Bruce Bochy acknowledged the staff discussed replacing disappointing third baseman Pablo Sandoval with Mike Fontenot, which would get an extra left-handed bat in the lineup. It also would invite one fewer double-play target for Braves right-hander Tim Hudson, who led the NL by inducing 32 of the rally-stunting grounders.
Sandoval’s errant throw in Game 2 Friday also turned a hot stovetop into a structure fire as the Braves rallied to tie in a three-run eighth.
Sandoval is 1-6 in the series.
