Somewhere, despite the fact that most of us are still focused on actual baseball being played, the perjury trial of Barry Bonds is still moving forward. Moving forward with all the speed of Prince Fielder running the bases, but moving forward nonetheless.
The Barry Bonds Trial Is Still Going On, And Now We Have Witnesses
And so today, the government unveiled its list of potential witnesses. Why it took them three years to put a witness list together could be considered puzzling, especially since government lawyers don’t get paid based on billable hours, but we’ll go with it.
In any case, the witnesses includes Greg Anderson -- who now faces about his seventh contempt of court citation -- and such baseball luminaries as Bobby Estalella and ... Jason Giambi. That ought to be a productive use of jurors’ time.
Prosecutor: “Mr. Giambi ... ”
Giambi: “I plead the fifth.”
Prosecutor: “I haven’t asked a question. What are you pleading the fifth about?”
Giambi: “I just plead the fifth. I wish I could tell you more, but I plead the fifth.”
But at the rate things are going, it will be sometime around 2019 when Giambi testifies -- meaning he probably actually won’t remember what he’s talking about. If we’re lucky, neither will the rest of us.
