And now it’s time to consider that we may be getting the pitcher’s duel we missed out on last night.
World Series Game 2, Rangers Vs. Giants: Matt Cain, C.J. Wilson Preserve Mutual Shutout
Matt Cain came out and made quick work of the Rangers in the top of the fourth. Maybe not "quick work" exactly - two of the at bats lasted five pitches - but for the third time in four frames, the Rangers went three up, three down. Michael Young grounded out to lead off. Josh Hamilton hit a ball well, but not well enough, to center field in the next at bat, and the final attempt belonged to Nelson Cruz, who was frozen by a two-strike slider for a punchout.
The Giants tried to push a run across in the bottom of the fourth, but C.J. Wilson wouldn't allow it. Following a leadoff strikeout by Buster Posey, Pat Burrell worked a solid at bat and wound up drawing a walk. The next batter - Cody Ross - hit a long fly to center, but Hamilton was able to flag it down just in front of the track. And up next, Aubrey Huff pulled a ball solidly to right, but Cruz was able to make the catch without going to too much trouble to end the frame.
This game is still scoreless. Four innings later, it’s all knotted up at 0-0. Cain’s pitch count stands at a terrific 46, while Wilson’s stands at a higher - but still quite good - 57. Wilson’s allowed two hits and a walk, while Cain’s allowed just the one hit.
