After the Rangers had such an offensive letdown in the top of the sixth, leaving the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position, it would've been understandable had C.J. Wilson come out and immediately let the Giants build on their lead. But Wilson was able to bear down and keep the gap where it was.
World Series Game 2, Rangers Vs. Giants: C.J. Wilson, Matt Cain Take 1-0 Score Into Stretch
Wilson would actually need 18 pitches to get through his bottom half. He threw six to Freddy Sanchez. He threw five to Buster Posey. And he threw seven to Pat Burrell. But Sanchez flew out to center. Posey struck out swinging. And Burrell grounded out to first, wrapping up a 1-2-3 frame. That put Wilson's pitch count at 91 through six, having allowed one run, three hits, and a walk, while striking out four.
Back out came Matt Cain for the top of the seventh. And Cain was at his best, just as he's been nearly all evening long. David Murphy flew out weakly on a 2-1 fastball. Matt Treanor pulled a ball hard to the right-center gap for potential extra bases, but the Giants had just replaced Burrell with Nate Schierholtz for defensive reasons and shifted Schierholtz over to right, and he was able to run down Treanor's drive with ease.
And with two down, Mitch Moreland rolled a grounder to the left side of the infield, where Juan Uribe cut it off in front of Edgar Renteria and gunned the ball to first for the third out.
We head to the seventh inning stretch with the score still 1-0 Giants. Cain has thrown 91 pitches, with 56 strikes. Wilson’s returning to the mound, although with his spot due up to hit in the eighth, this will be his last inning, should he even be able to make it through.
