World Series Game 2 Ratings Slightly Better Than $#*! My Dad Says

Let’s get one thing out of the way up front: there’s no reason to care about television ratings. Neither you nor I ought pay them much mind, because neither you nor I is a television executive. We watch what we want to watch because we enjoy what we watch, regardless of how many other people feel the same way we do. Ratings are only weakly correlated to quality, if they’re correlated at all. Budweiser’s remarkable distribution and sales numbers don’t mean their beer is more enjoyable than a delicious smoked porter.

↵With that said, we’re two days into the 2010 World Series schedule, and Game 2 saw a sizable ratings drop from Game 1. After Game 1 on Wednesday averaged 14.47 million viewers, Thursday’s Game 2 came in at 12.05, a drop of nearly 17%. For the sake of comparison, The Big Bang Theory drew 12.8 million viewers, while $#*! My Dad Says drew 10.82 million viewers. This is remarkable, given that $#*! My Dad Says is terrible, and the first step in a carefully-planned path towards eugenics. CSI and The Mentalist each drew more than 14 million viewers a little later on, blowing the World Series out of the water.

↵But, whatever, no one expected the 2010 World Series to be a ratings machine. What’s more alarming is the 17% drop following a wild Game 1. I can’t actually find any evidence anywhere of there ever having been such a drop between the first two games. Were this dip to continue over the course of the week, a hypothetical Game 7 would draw just 4.81 million viewers, a viewing attendance comparable in size to an LSU sellout.
