Without consulting with any experts or poring over a stack of statistical books, we feel fairly confident in saying this: Rangers' pitcher Derek Holland has at least tied the record for worst career ERA in the World Series. The good news for Holland: He might get a chance to get back under the record.
With Thursday Night Performance, Derek Holland’s ERA Is Literally Infinity
The back story, for those of you who don't know, is that Holland walked three straight batters without recording an out Thursday night in Game 2 against the Giants. He was pulled, but the runners scored. That gives Holland a career ERA in the World Series of infinity.
But the Rangers’ skipper says he’s ready to give Holland the chance to shed the dubious mark if the time is right.
“My guys know how much confidence I have in them, and they know when an opportunity presents itself again that I will not hesitate to give them the ball,” Manager Ron Washington said. “That’s the way we’ve done things all year, and I won’t hesitate to do it again.”
All it takes is the first out, at which point Holland’s ERA will tumble to a far more respectable 81.00, if no one has scored in the interim. Hey, it’s progress.
