After Carl Pavano put up a zero in the top half, the bottom started with consecutive singles by Delmon Young and Jim Thome off Andy Pettitte. Michael Cuddyer moved them over with a grounder, and after Jason Kubel drew a walk to load the bases, Danny Valencia lifted a fly ball to right that was deep enough to score the first run of the game.
