Former Seattle Mariner Ken Griffey Jr. joined the many eulogizing Dave Niehaus tonight after the legendary broadcaster passed away following a heart attack. Niehaus was at the microphone when Griffey stepped-up to the plate for his first big league at-bat and called many of Griffey’s memorable moments as a Mariner. In an interview with Shannon Drayer and Matt Pitman on 710 ESPN in Seattle, Griffey said Niehaus was “one of the greatest men I’ve ever met and had the privilege of knowing.”
Ken Griffey Jr. On Niehaus: ‘He’s One Of The Greatest Men I’ve Ever Met’
He spoke of Niehaus and the way he dealt with players, saying “You didn’t know if he was the No. 1 guy on the team or the No. 25 guy on the team, he treated everyone the same.” It was that class that earned Niehaus a reputation as one of the greats in the broadcasting business and an induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008.
Griffey summed up what Niehaus meant to the Mariners as well as anyone could have tonight, saying “He is Mariners' baseball. Everyone talks about all the players, we can’t hold a candle to that man. It’s hard to think that he’s gone.”
