There’s a funny thing about the playoffs, and the World Series - as soon as it’s all over, much of the country just completely checks out. Fans of the winning team go crazy, and many make plans to attend the celebratory parade. Fans of the losing team lick their wounds and say mean things about other people they’ll regret the next day. But the fans of everyone else just turn their attention right to the offseason. They’ve had a month to reflect on the year their team had, and they’re not invested enough in the winner or loser to feel much in the way of World Series emotion.
Enough About The Giants Winning The World Series; It’s Time To Talk Free Agents
↵
For those fans, I offer two bits of good news. The first is that Major League Baseball is prepared to move on as well, and following the end of Game 5 they almost immediately released a list of 142 free agents. From Troy Glaus to Kevin Mench, you can look that list up and down and wonder how the Yankees are going to find room for 142 new players. Also included at the end are players who might become free agents if their contract options are declined. This is a list of potential Yankees.
↵And the second is that the offseason’s going to begin in earnest sooner than it has in the past. Teams now have only five days to negotiate exclusively with their own free agents, down from the 15 days it’s been in the past. What that means is that we could theoretically see 142 players sign with the Yankees at 12:01am this Sunday morning. Or maybe 141, since they probably don’t want Jeff Weaver to come back.
