Justin Upton Trade Rumors Expand To Mariners, Others

Last week, Justin Upton trade rumors started to swirl, as Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers made it known that he was listening to offers for the 23-year-old potential superstar. And, courtesy of Nick Cafardo, we learn that the Red Sox and Blue Jays aren’t the only teams with strong interest.

Any team, of course, would be ecstatic to have a player like Upton signed to his long-term contract. But not every team is willing to consider paying what Arizona wants to get for him. Cafardo names the Red Sox and Blue Jays, who have both the resources and the need. He also names the Mariners, Marlins, and Royals as having “considerable interest”.

Upton would be an acquisition who’s expensive in talent but cheap in price, relative to the return. He’s due just $49.5 million over the next five years, topping out at $14.5 million in 2015. Because of his youth, talent, and contract, the Diamondbacks will be seeking nothing short of an absolute haul in return, presumably including at least two young Major League-ready assets. Each of the teams listed has the young players necessary to pull off a trade, but we can’t know the degree of their interest from the outside.

Given the wide demand and the infrequency with which a player like Upton is traded, discussions could take place over the next several weeks, if not months, and it’s entirely possible that Upton comes out of this offseason still wearing an Arizona uniform.
