If you saw television interviews with Giants' closer Brian Wilson over the past few months, either with Fox Sports' Chris Rose or the instant classic interview with Jim Rome, you heard Wilson make reference to his friend, "The Machine."
Gov. Schwarzenegger Unfamiliar With Just Who Is ‘The Machine’
The character was a prank from Wilson that only mentioned in oblique reference, except for the one time a guy in an S&M costume (it was eventually revealed to be teammate Pat Burrell) wandered through the background when Wilson did a satellite interview with Rose, to the utter baffled delight of the sports show host.
Nonetheless, anyone who has paid attention to the joke knows that Brian Wilson and “The Machine” are two separate entities, even if the character is the brainchild of the certified ninja closer. Sadly for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a staffer neglected to apprise him of the distinction and the governor made the mistake of referring to Wilson as “The Machine,” making a hokey Terminator joke in the process.
