Jorge De La Rosa, Rockies Reach Contract Agreement

On Monday, we learned that free agent lefty Jorge de la Rosa was on the verge of re-signing with the Rockies on a three-year contract. Now, courtesy of Troy Renck, we find out that the two sides have indeed agreed in principle, and that the only hurdle remaining is a physical exam.

Jorge de la Rosa will not receive a three-year contract, but rather a two-year contract with third- and fourth-year options. The contract comes with a $1 million signing bonus, a $9.5 million salary in 2011, and a $10 million salary in 2012. 2013 has a player option worth $11 million, with a $1 million buyout. Should de la Rosa exercise that option, the Rockies will then get a $11 million club option for 2014.

As such, de la Rosa will return to a rotation fronted by Ubaldo Jimenez and Jason Hammel. With other young talents like Esmil Rogers and Jhoulys Chacin also ready to go, the Rockies should feature a fearsome starting five that will make them excellent candidates for the playoffs.

Suitors of de la Rosa, like the Nationals and Pirates, will now have to turn their attention elsewhere, with Carl Pavano being perhaps the best remaining free agent starter.
