Now that the World Series is done, we’re headed toward the postseason milestones that give us a reason to talk about baseball while we wait for actual games to start again. The awards selections and top free-agency deals are on the list, as well as the annual debate on who should go to the Hall of Fame. One of the ballots features a particularly interesting duo.
George Steinbrenner, Billy Martin Uneasily Share HOF Ballot
↵↵Yankees owner George Steinbrenner will be on the Hall of Fame veterans committee ballot next month with former New York manager Billy Martin.
↵↵In some ways, it’s appropriate that Steinbrenner and Martin are on the same ballot; the stories about the two men’s legendary clashes are almost as important to each one’s public profile as the success they shared. Of course, if the veterans committee really wanted to be accurate, they would vote Martin into the Hall, vote him out, and then vote him in again.
↵Among the other names on the ballot -- which covers the expansion era -- are Dave Concepcion, Steve Garvey and Tommy John. Whether any of them will get into the hall is an open question; the veterans committee has proven to be a curmudgeonly group when it comes to voting to allow others to share their honor.
