On Tuesday, Joe Torre participated in a press conference honoring himself and fellow managers Bobby Cox, Cito Gaston, and Lou Piniella. Here are a couple of Torre’s remarks, as quoted by Dave Brown:
Joe Torre Communicates To Derek Jeter Via ‘The Texting’
Torre: I don't wear those rings without Derek Jeter on the ballclub." Says he's been communicating with Jeter thru "the texting."
Hmm. Well, it’s not the most ridiculous Jeter sentiment I’ve ever heard, since we’re largely talking about late-‘90s Jeter, the one who was capable of putting up an OPS+ of 153, but I’m so allergic to Jeterpraise by this point that I’m incapable of approaching it objectively. Instead, I’d like to address referring to texting as “the texting,” which he says “his daughter taught [him] how to do.“
Incidentally, Torre also believes that he would not be able to send a text message without Derek Jeter, but his understanding of how text messaging works is still somewhat incomplete, as demonstrated by this diagram.
