A planned Wednesday doubleheader between the New York Mets and the Milwaukee Brewers was canceled by the commissioner's office when both teams' managers engaged in what was deemed unsportsmanlike and improper conduct.
Mets/Brewers Doubleheader Canceled On Account Of Managerial Stonewalling, Pantslessness
↵The Mets entered the day 77-79, 16 games out of first place, and it is considered inevitable that manager Jerry Manuel will be dismissed at the end of the year. Seemingly aware of and in response to the intensifying rumors, Manuel Wednesday refused to cooperate with the umpiring crew prior to the first game, employing a number of outlandish maneuvers intended to delay the first pitch. According to crew chief Tim Tschida, Manuel’s initial lineup card designated Pete Harnisch as his starting pitcher, and was written using macaroni pasted to cardboard. Subsequent lineups featured four players, 37 players, and Ruben Tejeda playing sixth base.
↵The Brewers, meanwhile, entered the day at 73-83, 14.5 games out of first place, and it is also considered inevitable that manager Ken Macha will be let go. Macha did not arrive at Citi Field until after batting practice was over, and delivered his lineup wearing only a pair of boxers with a hole in the front.
↵The doubleheader has not been rescheduled.
