Toronto Blue Jays baseball hasn't been a big deal in a long time. However when they were a big deal, Cito Gaston had a lot to do with it. It's easy to forget that the Gaston lorded over the greatest era in the history of the franchise and has spent the better part of the last thirty years as part of the organization.
Blue Jays Send Cito Gaston And His Mustache Out In Style
Gaston will officially hang up his cleats after this season and he was honored before his final home game Wednesday by the franchise. A Blue Jays’ who’s who was on hand for the celebration.
Former players George Bell, Joe Carter, Pat Hentgen, Devon White and current outfielder Vernon Wells joined general manager Alex Anthopoulos, president Paul Beeston and Nadir Mohamed, CEO of team owner Rogers Communications, on a blue stage set up behind the mound and marked with Gaston's uniform number, 43.
Gaston is one of only 21 managers to win more than one World Series, is a member of the Blue Jays “Level of Excellence” and has almost 900 victories. Some experts feel like he’s a lock for the Hall of Fame while Blue Jays fans just appreciate what he’s done for the franchise.
Of course, no celebration of Gaston is complete without recognizing his fabulous mustache. In a world where facial hair trends come and go, Gaston’s ‘stache was a constant for the Jays.
Toronto's Travis Snider and a few other players paid Gaston the highest honor he could by donning a makeshift Cito 'stache. And if that mustache is what people remember more than his World Series wins, so be it. It's still better than anything most folks have done.
