Chris Young Signs With Mets After Passing Physical

A few days ago, Chris Young and the Mets agreed to a one-year contract. However, that agreement was pending a physical exam, which was no small hurdle for a pitcher with Young’s recent history of health problems. But worry no more (if you were worrying) - news is out now that Young has passed his physical, and has officially been signed.

Young will receive a base salary of $1.1 million with the Mets. However, there are playing time incentives that could take his deal up to a maximum value of $4.5 million. This is the same maximum salary that could be reached by fellow free agent signee Chris Capuano.

The 31-year-old Young will look to join Mike Pelfrey, Jonathon Niese, R.A. Dickey, and Capuano in the Mets’ initial starting rotation. Young (and Capuano) is a risky investment, given his trouble staying on the mound, but if he’s healthy, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be successful in Citi Field. Young works up in the zone, missing bats and allowing a ton of fly balls, and Citi should be able to keep most of them in the park. A healthy Young is an effective and unusual starting pitcher.

If Young or Capuano - or anyone else - isn’t able to begin the season in the rotation, Dillon Gee is the top reinforcement.
