Every baseball-loving kid goes out in the back yard and dreams of hitting a walk-off home run in a World Series game for the hometown team. Last night, in Game 6 of the 2011 World Series, David Freese lived that dream, blasting a game-winning homer to dead center field in the 11th inning, and saving the Cardinals season.
Going Beyond The Everyday: David Freese’s Big Night
Freese grew up 45 minutes west of Busch Stadium, in Wildwood, Mo. He grew up a Cardinals fan.
The 28-year-old has arrived this postseason, winning NLCS MVP. Late on Thursday night, he grew his legend. First, Freese laced a two-out, two-run, game-tying triple in the ninth inning to send the game to extra innings. Then he led off in the bottom of the 11th inning and ended the game with one swing.
Even stranger, Freese could have been the goat. He dropped a fifth-inning pop up that led to a Ranger run. Fortunately, for Freese and the Cardinals, he was at the plate with a chance to deliver a hit that St. Louis, and one of its own, will never forget.
