Back in its younger days, before Youtube, before the ironic .gif revolution, before live-updating comments on SB Nation, and before SB Nation, perhaps the internet's most famous creation was the Olsen Twins Legality Countdown Clock. I'm not proud of it, and you're not proud of it, but there's no denying its popularity and seeming ubiquity.
The Albert Pujols Countdown Clock Is Inaccurate, Foreboding
That, naturally, led to the development of a bunch of other countdown clocks, and now that his Spring Training contract negotiations deadline is just around the corner, we’ve got one for Albert Pujols.
One problem? The Albert Pujols Countdown is counting down to Friday, February 18th. Pujols, though, intends to arrive at camp early, looking to report on Wednesday, February 16th. It stands to reason that the 16th, then, will be the true deadline, meaning the Cardinals have two fewer days to work something out.
But despite the error, the sentiment stands. Watching the ticker feels ominous, and should time run out without a contract in place, the Cardinals and their fans will be dealt a severe emotional blow while still having the best baseball player in the world tied down for another several months. In that sense, it’ll be awkward, like when you misbehave as a kid and your dad threatens to punish you just as soon as you leave your grandparents’ house. Without a Pujols extension, the Cardinals will play for 2011, but they’ll be hard-pressed not to think about the fast-approaching doom.
Six and a half days. Tick tock.
