Derek Jeter and the people Derek Jeter hired recently completed a massive waterfront mansion in Tampa, Florida that is to serve as Jeter's "dream house". Locals have taken to calling it "St. Jetersburg", and you can watch a news segment on the property below.
Four Issues With News Segment On Derek Jeter’s New Tampa House
I have four problems with this segment:
(1) Poor choice of opening photo. The segment begins in the studio, with the anchor talking beside the words “NEW MANSION” and an image of Jeter’s face. You’d think, though, that they would’ve used an image of Jeter in uniform. Instead, Jeter is referred to only as a “sports superstar” and the word “Yankees” doesn’t come up until the 0:54 mark. The anchor speaks as if she doesn’t have any idea who this guy is, and while the audience should be familiar with Jeter, that can’t necessarily be taken for granted, and the segment did a poor job of introducing him as anything other than a guy who’s rich enough to build a big house.
(2) Color coordination. Unless you’re actually playing sports, this is never a good idea. It’s impossible not to notice, and all it does is breed competition about who wears it better. Each anchor makes snide off-camera remarks about how “that top looks especially snug today” and before long everybody’s dealing with a hostile workplace.
(3) Image of old man in walker slowly approaching Jeter’s property. Did you know that Derek Jeter is old by baseball standards and is nearing retirement? If not, here’s one of the Founding Fathers.
(4) Misidentification of sexy girlfriend as number. Minka Kelly is undeniably sexy and undeniably not a number. Unless they’re going with antiquated street slang, like “that’s some blond number over there by the bar.” In which case, kudos, news, on your creative brand of sexism.
