Pedro Martinez might never pitch again. But he'll be with us forever. Yesterday, his portrait went on display at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery:
First The Smithsonian, Next The Hall of Fame
↵↵The portrait was created by American painter Susan Miller-Havens in 2000 with oil and beeswax on Baltic birch and measures 57 inches by 21 inches. It’s a gift to the museum from MLB Network analyst Peter Gammons and will be included in the exhibition “Recent Acquisitions.”
↵↵The first time I saw Pedro pitch, all the way back in 1993, I said to myself, “Self, he’s handsome and he’s got wonderful stuff and he’ll be a great addition to your Strat-O-Matic team, but we won’t really know anything until we see what he can do in oil and beeswax on Baltic birch.”
↵And I was right.
↵(In all seriousness, it really is a beautiful likeness.)
