The best news of the spring? Against some odds, Tim Wakefield will pitch for the Red Sox for the 17th straight season. Scott Lauber (via the Boston Herald):
Tim Wakefield Makes Roster Again, This Time As Long Man

↵Wakefield's job description -- long reliever/insurance starter - won't be any different on Opening Day, next Friday against the Rangers in Arlington, Texas. At this point, as a 44-year-old knuckleballer who doesn't hold runners well, he isn't a good fit for late-inning situations in close games. And for an 18-year veteran with 193 career wins, it's practically an insult to pitch only in blowouts.

Wakefield still needs 13 wins to match Cy Young and Roger Clemens on the franchise's all-time list, and that now looks like a real long shot. But I'm just happy to know that someone born in 1966 is still in the major leagues.
