The history of unusual and occasionally hilarious baseball player names is well established. From Grant Balfour to Jon Coutlangus to Greg Legg, some guys were literally born to stand out. It’s only fitting, then, that sometimes the players will be represented by agents with unusual and occasionally hilarious names of their own. Please select your favorite from this group of three! And get more familiar with them after the jump.
POLL: The Best Baseball Agent Name
Candidate 1: Burton Rocks. 39 years old, Rocks has co-authored or collaborated on books with guys like Paul O'Neill, Steve Lyons, and Bob Feller. He also has his own boutique sports agency, where he represents minor leaguers like Robinson Cancel and coaches like Jim Riggleman. Given that Burton Rocks looks like this while Jim Riggleman looks like this, Burton Rocks and Jim Riggleman should probably switch names.
Candidate 2: Jim Masteralexis. I wrote a post about Manny Delcarmen a few weeks ago. Later that night, I got an email from one Jim Masteralexis that read "nice post." After some Googling, I found out that Manny Delcarmen is a client of Masteralexis', and possibly the only client of Masteralexis'. Jim Masteralexis sounds like he and Hank Scorpio were roommates in college.
Candidate 3: Bean Stringfellow. I've known about Stringfellow for a while, since he represented Billy Wagner. But then Billy Wagner retired, which made me sad until I found out that Stringfellow also represents other players like Francisco Cordero. A former player and one of five Stringfellows in the history of minor league baseball, Bean's given name is Thornton Bayne Stringfellow, which keeps him sounding every bit as awesome, albeit less like a salad.
