Bud Selig and Major League Baseball finally seized control of the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday afternoon, the first step in bringing an end to Frank McCourt’s epically dysfunctional reign over the past few years. Now, the obvious question is, what happens to the Dodgers?
A Solution For The L.A. Dodgers And Major League Baseball
For now, the future’s unclear. McCourt will challenge Selig’s power play, and there’s still a good chance he could win and regain control. If he doesn’t... Then that’s a whole new problem. Major League Baseball doesn’t exactly have the greatest track record managing teams.
As for prospective owners, names like Mark Cuban have been mentioned, and other celebrities like Oscar De La Hoya have expressed interest in the past. But you know what would be the coolest the solution of all?
BOOM. Jay-Z takes over, and then moves the Dodgers back to Brooklyn.
And you think I’m kidding... Jay-Z could raise capital for this move in a matter of hours. Not only would this be the single coolest power move of all time, but it’d probably make the Dodgers the coolest baseball team on the planet. To explain it in Jay-Z terms, Yankee hats would go the way of Cristal, and the Dodgers would be the new Ace of Spades.
Plus, it’s baseball. I say this respectfully, but as far as popularity’s concerned, baseball’s moving in the wrong direction. For instance, before the Dodgers were taken over by Major League Baseball, how many people even knew that Frank McCourt as an owner, and not the author of Angela’s Ashes? Quick--name ten players that play for the Dodgers right now.
Chances are, a lot of sports fans come up empty on that one.
So, all I’m saying is that baseball couldn’t find a better ambassador in the entire world. So why not shake things up a little bit? Oh, “Because Los Angeles needs at least one baseball team and New York City doesn’t need three,” you say. Well, wait a second... The Mets are broke, right?
Sell them to Oscar De La Hoya, and give that awful, awful franchise a fresh start in a new city. For Mets fans, it’s probably the best case scenario at this point. And if Dodgers fans complain about losing the team they love and getting stuck with the Mets? What goes around comes around, guys.
It would all breathe new life into baseball, but more importantly, a Brooklyn-born rapper buying the team that L.A. stole in 1958 and moving them back to his neighborhood would that be the single most baller move in the history of the entertainment industry.
So, seriously... Every movement starts somewhere. Why not here?
