NYT Baseball Blog Walks Into Mordor, Regrets The Error

Please revisit this April blog post in the New York Times concerning the beloved named bats of Mets pitcher R. A. Dickey, and scroll down to view one of the most awesome (in the real, Biblical sense of inspiring awe) corrections ever beheld in a major media outlet. For posterity, we have reprinted it below the jump, in full:

Correction: May 8, 2011An item in the Extra Bases baseball notebook last Sunday misidentified, in some editions, the origin of the name Orcrist the Goblin Cleaver, which Mets pitcher R. A. Dickey gave one of his bats. Orcrist was not, as Dickey had said, the name of the sword used by Bilbo Baggins in the Misty Mountains in “The Hobbit”; Orcrist was the sword used by the dwarf Thorin Oakenshield in the book. (Bilbo Baggins’s sword was called Sting.)

Really? Over a full week it took, to run THAT correction? Did it just take that long for the poor editorial drone in charge of these things to dig out from what must have been a lonely mountain of shrieking hatemail? It only took three comments below the post itself for a living, breathing human being to type “Shame on you!” to the New York Times for this error; I dare not imagine the invective that must have been flung from anonymous email accounts away from the public eye. (Also, wouldn’t a baseball bat really be a weapon better suited to a cave troll? Do we have to do everything for you jocks?)
