The New York Yankees are hoping that this is the weekend that Derek Jeter finally reaches 3,000 hits. He's two away from the milestone, and the Yankees are at home, so the setting is perfect. Then, weather intervened on Friday night and cancelled the teams' scheduled game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Joe Girardi Wishes Rays Were More Accomodating To Derek Jeter
The two teams then had a choice: make up the game Saturday as part of a doubleheader, or reschedule it for later in the season. There’s a little-known rule that if a team plays two day/night doubleheaders in a season, they can vote against playing a third. Since the Rays had already played two, they voted to reschedule the game for September 22. This made the Yankees mad.
Specifically, it made Joe Girardi mad:
“People have made a lot of arrangements to try and see this happen on the day that they picked,” Girardi said. “It’s unfortunate that we lose a game here and takes a day away from when it could have happened. That was important to us, it’s important to our fans because of what our fans have meant to our organization.”
Shame on you, Rays! How dare you infringe on our right to make Derek Jeter even more of a focus!
Evan Longoria, for his part, claims it was the Yankees who said no to the doubleheader, but that doesn't seem right. It's very much in character for the Yankees to value Jeter's milestone over the state of their own ballclub.
