World Series Odds: Trade Deadline Pushes Dodgers, Angels Lower

The odds of a Los Angeles area team winning the World Series got a lot better this week, thanks to the MLB trade deadline. The Dodgers and Angels were the biggest movers on the baseball futures menu at most sportsbooks after acquiring big-name talent before Tuesday's deadline.

Brandon League, Shane Victorino and Hanley Ramirez now wear Dodger Blue and fans who thought about betting them at 22/1 odds a week ago now see them at just 14/1.

“They didn’t get the pitcher they wanted, but they did a great job filling holes for a run in the NL,” said Mike Pickett of OddsShark.com.

Across town, the Angels were busy trading for the best pitcher available. Milwaukee's Zack Greinke slides into a potent starting rotation for the Angels, who are now the third betting choice in Vegas and online shops alike.

They moved from 10/1 to 15/2.

And the San Francisco Giants, anxious to keep pace with the Dodgers in the NL West, traded for Hunter Pence. The RF was a deadline acquisition for the Phillies a year ago and was peddled by the slumping Phils.

The Yankees remained atop the World Series odds list at 19/4, slightly ahead of the Texas Rangers at 5/1. Texas acquired Ryan Dempster from the Cubs while the hot Yankees were strangely quiet.

The trade deadline also spelled the end of any hopes the preseason favorites would make the playoffs. The Phillies were considered armed and dangerous but injuries and slumps made them sellers at the deadline.

They have fallen to 75/1 odds, below the Blue Jays and Orioles.

The Nationals - for years, the NL's whipping boys - are 9/1 on the latest list, followed closely by the Reds and Tigers at 10/1.

“We moved the Dodgers even lower to 8/1 after these moves today,” said a spokesman for TopBet.
