Carlos Gonzalez injury: Rockies OF to decide on finger surgery soon

Gonzalez did not take a major league at-bat since first going in the disabled list in early August.

Starting Wednesday, Colorado Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez will play in the instructional league in an effort to test his sprained right middle finger, reports Troy Renck of the Denver Post.

How Gonzalez’s finger holds up in those games will determine whether he has offseason surgery on the injury. The Rockies had hoped to give him a few at-bats at the end of the regular season to test the digit, but that never happened. Gonzalez did have a cortisone shot that helped him feel better.

The injury has lingered since late July. Gonzalez had reportedly been leaning heavily towards having surgery as recently as mid-September. Unless he shows a significant amount of progress in the instructional league, that appears to be the direction he will go.

Gonzalez was placed on the disabled list Aug. 7 and spent a month on the shelf. He was activated when rosters expanded in September but has only been used as a late-innings defensive replacement. Gonzalez did not hit in a major league game after he went 1-4 on Aug. 4.
