Manager Ned Yost signs 2-year contract extension with the Royals

Yost helped the Royals earn their first winning season since 2003, but fell short of the playoffs.

John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Royals announced a two-year extension for Manager Ned Yost at a Tuesday press conference. The deal will keep Yost in Kansas City through 2015. Financial details of the deal are not yet known.

Yost has been the manager of the Royals since taking over in 2010 after the Royals removed Trey Hillman from the position.

Since taking over in Kansas City, the Royals have a 284-329 record. Yost led the team to an 86-76 record in 2013, the first winning season the franchise has had in a decade and their most wins since 1989, when the Royals won 92 games.

The Royals were on the verge of a playoff berth this season, lingering in the American League wild card hunt right up to the final week of the season, but falling short. They had an AL best 43-27 record following the All-Star break.

The last time Yost had a team on the brink of making the playoffs, he was fired two weeks before the end of the 2008 season by the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers would end up making the playoffs that year, losing in the NL Divisional Series to the Phillies.
