Yankees GM Brian Cashman meeting with Joe Girardi’s agent Wednesday

Cashman will continue discussing a new contract for Girardi, who is a managerial free agent.

The Star-Ledger-US PRESSWIRE

New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman will meet with Joe Girardi's agent on Wednesday in hopes of signing the manager to a new deal.

“We are going to give him a real good reason to stay,” Cashman told Joel Sherman of the New York Post. If Girardi does return, Cashman says he would like to invite the entire coaching staff back as well.

Girardi has been manager of the Yankees since 2008, but a three year contract he signed prior to 2011 is expiring following the 2013 season. He has not had a losing season in New York, posting a 564-408 record.

The Yankees have missed the postseason just two times in Girardi's time with the team: In his first year as manager in 2008 when they won 89 games and in 2013, the latest season, when the Yankees fell short while dealing with a myriad of injuries. Girardi managed the team to a World Series victory in 2009.

Prior to his time with the Yankees, Girardi managed the 2006 season for a Florida Marlins that finished 78-84. The Marlins let him go after one year.

If Girardi does not stay in New York, the Chicago Cubs have been heavily rumored as a potential destination. Chicago fired manager Dale Sveum earlier this week and could afford to bring Girardi as a replacement.
