Young signed a minor league deal with Tampa Bay as a free agent on Aug. 22 after the Phillies released him a week earlier. He played in 23 games for the Rays as a September call-up, including 14 starts at designated hitter, posting a 780 OPS while the Rays squeaked into the playoffs.
He will be a free agent in the offseason, but enjoyed his time with the Rays. He was made the first overall pick in 2003 by Tampa Bay and played two seasons there before he was traded to the Twins in the Matt Garza blockbuster.
Rays’ bullpen wants Rodney back
Fellow Rays' reliever Joel Peralta told reporters he hopes free agent closer Fernando Rodney will return to the team for another year, reports MLB.com.
“If he’s not here, I’m really, really going to miss the guy. He’s one of the best as a pitcher, one of the best as teammates. We’ve got a great relationship, and I’m really hoping that he’s back,” Peralta said.
Peralta also said he thought Rodney might accept less money from the Rays to return to Tampa Bay, but that he would have to see what the market is like and what the Rays offer.
Rodney has been the Rays closer for the past two years, notching 85 saves. He has pitched in 144 games for the team and posted a 1.91 ERA with a 1.04 WHIP.
Molina, Loney uncertain to return
Both first baseman James Loney and catcher Jose Molina may leave the Rays in free agency this offseason, reports the Tampa Bay Times.
Loney signed a one year deal last offseason and exceeded all expectations as he hit .299/.348/.430 while playing his usual solid defense. Molina split time with Jose Lobaton at backstop, but is also nearing retirement.
While the Rays have some interest in both returning, it will depend on the type of contract for which they are looking.
