NLCS 2013: Allen Craig hoping to play for Cardinals

If Craig is able to return, he would likely act as a pinch-hitter in late-game situations.

USA TODAY Sports

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Allen Craig isn't ruling out a return to the team in time for the National League Championship Series, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

“We’re going to find that out real soon,” Craig told reporters. It’s possible the team will take time Thursday to discuss a possible return.

Craig has been unable to play for the past five weeks after suffering a Lisfranc injury in his left foot. Last week, general manager John Mozeliak said there is a low possibility of Craig playing in October though it could happen. Matt Adams has been starting at first in Craig's absence.

If the Cardinals do have Craig on their NLCS roster, he would likely act as a pinch-hitter rather than as the starting first baseman. St. Louis’ bench is lacking a true hitter, especially one with pop.

Craig, 29, hit .315/.373/.457 with 13 home runs over 134 games in 2013.

The Cardinals advanced in the playoffs with a 6-1 win over the Pirates in Game 5 of the NLDS Wednesday night.
