Jacoby Ellsbury potential Mariners free agent target, says Rosenthal

Ellsbury will become a sought-after free agent in the offseason and may leave the Red Sox for a new club.

Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal appeared on the Dennis and Callahan show and said that he believes free agent-to-be Jacoby Ellsbury will sign six or seven year deal worth $21 million per year with the Seattle Mariners.

Ellsbury is set to become arguably the best outfielder on the market this offseason in a free agent class that also will include Shin-Soo Choo, Curtis Granderson and Carlos Beltran. The speedy Ellsbury stole an MLB best 52 bags in 2013 while posting a 781 OPS while playing in 134 games.

The Mariners could certainly use a player of Ellsbury's caliber if they hope to contend in the next couple of years. Two of their best bats, Kendrys Morales and Raul Ibanez, are set to become free agents while oft-injured Franklin Gutierrez has a $7.5 million team option that may not be picked up.

In 2013, Ellsbury’s .355 on-base percentage would have led all Mariners hitters as the team has lacked a true table setter. Signing Ellsbury could certainly give the team a spark at the top of the lineup. For now there doesn’t appear to be solid evidence of the Mariners having great enough interest to give him nearly $130 million, however. Just Rosenthal’s speculation.
