Lou Piniella not interested in return to Mariners

Piniella has no interest in a return to managing.

Former Seattle Mariners manager Lou Piniella turned down the team's offer to come out of retirement and manage, reports Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

The Mariners have been searching for a manager after Eric Wedge declined to return to the team after the 2013 season. A source described Seattle’s pursuit of Piniella to Rosenthal as a “full-court press,” but the 70-year old did not accept the offer.

Piniella indicated that he does not want to manage again, telling Rosenthal:

"I'm happy doing what I'm doing, which is watching a little baseball, doing a little bit of television for the Yankees, 15 games or so a year. It keeps me involved a bit."

Piniella served as Seattle’s manager from 1993-2002, leading the team to four post-season appearances. He is the only manager in Mariners history to reach the postseason and the only one to last longer than four years.

Seattle went a disappointing 71-91 in 2013. The club has a number of talented and young players on both sides of the ball, but general manager Jack Zduriencik is entering the final year of his contract and his future is expected to hinge on the Mariners record in 2014.
