Mets will not pursue Robinson Cano Cano, Jose Abreu

The Mets are not expected to be players for two of the top free agents available this winter.

The New York Mets are not expected to pursue high-priced free agents Robinson Cano and Jose Abreu, reports Andy Martino of the New York Daily News.

Cano is searching for a 10-year, $305 million contract this winter. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson is not comfortable handing out long contracts; he reportedly struggled giving David Wright an eight-year contract extension, preferring to sign players to shorter deals.

New York sent scouts to watch a showcase for Abreu in the Dominican Repulbic last week. The Cuban defector, however, plays first base and the Mets have a number of internal options to fill the position. Ike Davis, Lucas Duda and Josh Satin all received playing time at first in 2013 for the Mets, with Wilmer Flores a potential fit at the position as well.

The Mets are feeling an increased urgency for “buzz and star power,” according to Martino. Two of the top free agent on the market, however, do not fit with what the team is attempting to build for the future.
