Both starters are now out of the contest.

Wacha, meanwhile, looked impeccable through 6 2/3 innings of work. The 22-year-old rookie right-hander allowed just five hits and one walk while recording eight punchouts. After allowing a two-out single to Nick Punto in the sixth, manaager Mike Matheny took the ball from his starter in favor of Kevin Siegrist. Don Mattingly elected to lift Kershaw, who had only thrown 72 pitches, in favor of bringing in Michael Young as a pinch-hitter.
Siegrist worked the count 2-2 against Young before bouncing a ball to catcher Yadier Molina. The ball skipped away far enough to allow Punto to take second base. Siegrist then uncorked a second wild pitch, and Punto moved to third. However, one pitch later, Siegrist got Michael Young to pop out to right field to end the threat.
Ronald Belisario came on in relief of Kershaw and pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh.
