Ubaldo Jimenez expected to test free agency

The starter could be looking for a big payday after posting a 1.82 ERA during his final 13 starts of the season.

Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez is expected to void the 2014 option on his contract and test free agency this winter, reports Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Jimenez will be entering free agency for the first time in his career. His current contract, a four-year, $10 million extension signed with the Colorado Rockies before the 2009 season, included club options for 2013 and 2014, but the final year of his deal became voidable when was acquired by Cleveland.

The right-hander struggled in 2011 and 2012, but turned in an impressive 2013 campaign, going 13-9 with a 3.30 ERA. Jimenez overmatched opponents down the stretch, posting a 1.82 ERA with 100 strikeouts over 84 innings after the All-Star break.

Cleveland is coming off a 92-win season, finishing just one game behind the Detroit Tigers for first place in the AL Central. Indians general manager Chris Antonetti indicated that the team will be aggressive in free agency, and Hoynes suggested they will talk to Jimenez during the process. The club could also tender Jimenez a qualifying offer, which would give the team draft pick compensation if he leaves.
