Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke not expected to start on short rest

The Dodgers are still planning to use Ricky Nolasco in Game 4 and Zack Greinke on normal rest in Game 5.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are not planning to use Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke on three-days rest against the St. Louis Cardinals, manager Don Mattingly told Eric Stephen of True Blue LA.

The Dodgers are down two games to none to against the Cardinals in the NLCS and face a tough pitching matchup Monday, with rookie starter Hyun-Jin Ryu facing Adam Wainwright. Neither Greinke or Kershaw were particularly taxed during the starts the first two games of the series; Greinke threw 104 pitches on Friday, while Kershaw was lifted after 72 on Saturday.

Mattingly remained insistent that his starters will pitch on normal rest, telling Stephen:

“We haven’t talked about Kershaw out of the bullpen. We haven’t talked about anybody on three day’s rest.”

Greinke has pitched on three-days rest twice in his career, while Kershaw pitched on short rest for the first time in his career during the NLDS.

Ricky Nolasco is currently scheduled to pitch Game 4 of the NLCS. Even if Greinke and Kershaw pitch on short rest, Nolasco will still need to pitch a potential Game 6.
