Allen Craig injury update: Cardinals 1B takes batting practice

The Cardinals hope that Craig will be able to return if they reach the World Series.

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Allen Craig took batting practice during the team's workout Sunday at Dodger Stadium, reports Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com.

Craig had not participated in outdoor batting practice since injuring his left foot on Sept. 4. He had taken swings off a tee during the past few weeks and hit in a batting cage Saturday.

The first baseman also did some light jogging in the outfield for a second straight day. The Cardinals are hoping to have Craig ready to serve as a pinch-hitter or designated hitter in the World Series, but don't want to push him back too quickly.

Craig spoke to Langosch about his recovery, telling the reporter:

“We’re continuing to progress. They have new challenges for me every day. We’ll see how it goes. My swing feels pretty good. Obviously, it’s not game speed. But there are things that I’ll do over the next week or so to try and get ready if we can advance. We have to focus on this series first before we get too far ahead.”

The Cardinals hold a 2-0 lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS. St. Louis has missed Craig's bat in the lineup, batting .134/.203/.194 in the first two games of the series, but have received strong performances from Joe Kelly, Michael Wacha and the bullpen to earn two one-run victories.
