St. Louis Cardinals third baseman David Freese left in the fifth inning of Game 3 of the National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers with an apparent ankle injury.
David Freese injury: Cardinals 3B leaves Game 3 of NLCS after hurting ankle
David Freese was replaced by Daniel Descalso after tweaking his ankle in the fifth inning.
Replays showed Freese tweak his ankle while fouling off a pitch against Hyun-jin Ryu. Freese pulled into first base gingerly after singling later in the at-bat for the first hit off of Ryu in the game. After Matt Adams singled in the next at-bat, Freese was lifted for pinch-runner Daniel Descalso, who took over at third base in the bottom half of the inning.
Freese has undergone surgery on both ankles during his career. He missed two months with a left ankle injury in 2009 before his 2010 season ended with a right ankle injury in June.
Freese entered Monday hitting .167 in 28 plate appearances this postseason. He posted the worst batting line of his career during the regular season, hitting .262/.340/.381.
