Defense attorney Joe Tacopina, currently representing Alex Rodriguez in his appeal of a 211-game suspension, nearly got into a physical altercation with one of Biogenesis founder Tony Bosch's lawyers two weeks ago, reports the New York Daily News.
A-Rod and Bosch lawyers in near brawl
The saga of Alex Rodriguez continues as things get more and more crazy with lawyers fighting on break.
Tacopina had to be physically restrained from fighting Julio Ayala, who is representing MLB’s chief witness in their fight to suspend Rodriguez.
For the first several days of the arbitration hearings, Bosch’s testimony had dominated the conversation. During a break, Tacopina was told by another lawyer that Bosch might stay on the stand for several more hours and, possibly, into another day. Tacopina then made reference to a criminal investigation centered around Bosch and Biogenesis, saying “I guess we have all of October, and by then Mr. Bosch will be in jail”
Ayala then fired back a retort implying that if Bosch were to go behind bars, Rodriguez would join him. To that, Tacopina made a derogatory statement towards Ayala and “his lying wife”, who is also representing Bosch.
Things then devolved from there as Tacopina charged at Ayala, but both men were restrained before any physical damage could be done. Neither Rodriguez nor Bosch were present to witness the altercation.
According to the Daily News, a source said that Tacopina apologized to Ayala the next day. Arbitration hearings are expected to start again on Wednesday.
