Brian McCann free agency: C could sign for $100 million

McCann will be a free agent for the first time and the scarcity of good hitters at the position could make him a very rich man.

Harry How

At least one MLB general manager believes soon-to-be free agent catcher Brian McCann could receive a six year deal worth $100 million in the offseason, reports ESPN.

That kind of contract would make McCann one of just three catchers currently in the MLB to hold a $100 million contract. The Twins signed Joe Mauer to an eight-year, $184 million extension prior to the 2011 season while the Giants inked Buster Posey to a nine year, $167 million deal last offseason.

McCann's $12 million salary in 2013 with the Braves already made him the third highest paid catcher in the game, behind Mauer and Yadier Molina. Molina was given $75 million over five years by the Cardinals prior to 2012.

The GM in question says he believes the 29-year-old McCann will be worth the money due to his ability to transition to first base or designated hitter when he is unable to play catcher.

McCann has spent his entire nine-year career with the Braves, hitting .277 with a an 823 OPS over his career. He has been named an all-star seven times and won the Silver Slugger five times while eclipsing 20 home runs in seven of the last eight years. After a poor 2012, he came back to hit .256/.336/.461 in 2013 and is known as a solid backstop.
