Cardinals vs. Dodgers score update, NLCS Game 4: 4-2 Cardinals, Top 8

Shane Robinson’s home run gives the Cardinals a two-run cushion.

Chris Withrow, who relieved Dodgers starter Ricky Nolasco at the top of the fifth inning and inherited a 3-2 deficit, quickly found himself in trouble in the sixth inning. Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina walked to lead off the inning, and his Dodger counterpart, A.J. Ellis, allowed Jon Jay to reach base via catcher's interference. However, Withrow picked up his teammate by getting David Freese to ground into a 5-4-3 double play to end the threat.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny relieved starter Lance Lynn following a one-out single by Yasiel Puig in the sixth inning in favor of 25-year-old righty Seth Maness. Facing Juan Uribe, Maness unleashed a 91 mph slider that resulted in a hot shot to shortstop Pete Kozma, who started a 6-4-3, inning-ending double play.

J.P. Howell took over pitching duties in the the seventh inning, and pinch-hitter Shane Robinson welcomed him to the contest with a one-out solo shot off the top of the left-field fence, putting St. Louis up 4-2. Howell worked himself into trouble by walking Carlos Beltran and allowing a single to Matt Holliday, but he worked out of trouble by striking out the side.

Carlos Martinez entered the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, and after getting A.J. Ellis to pop out to second base, he surrendered a double to Nick Punto. Punto’s double quickly turned into a moot point, though; before delivering his next pitch, Martinez quickly turned and fired a perfect pickoff to Kozma, then retired Carl Crawford to escape the seventh.
