Nationals manager search: Matt Williams interviews, Brad Ausmus reportedly up next

The Nats are “moving the process along” in their quest to find a replacement for Davey Johnson.

The Washington Nationals interviewed Arizona Diamondbacks third base coach Matt Williams for their vacant managerial position on Wednesday, per Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post. The team is also expected to discuss the job with San Diego Padres front office assistant Brad Ausmus, according to Kilgore (via Federal Baseball).

Williams and Ausmus are the newest names linked to the Nationals’ search to replace Davey Johnson, who retired at the end of the regular season. The list also includes Nationals bench coach Randy Knorr and third base coach Trent Jewett as well as former Baltimore Orioles legend Cal Ripken.

Williams garnered the interest of the Colorado Rockies last offseason before the team settled on Walt Weiss. Williams has a connection with the Nationals. General manager Mike Rizzo served as the D-Backs' scouting director in the early-2000's, when Williams was at the tail-end of his playing career.

Ausmus interviewed for the Boston Red Sox job last winter. Like Williams, Ausmus has no major- or minor-league managing experience. However, he served as the skipper for Team Israel in the 2013 World Baseball Classic.
