The Washington Nationals continue to plug away in their hunt for a new manager: The club interviewed bench coach Randy Knorr late last week and may move on to third-base coach Trent Jewett next, reports Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post.

Knorr, 44, has been with the Nats organization since 2001, when they were still operating in Montreal under the watch of Sauron Jeffrey Loria. He’s been the team’s bench coach the last two seasons. Jewett, 49, hasn’t been with the Nats quite as long -- since 2010 -- but does have ample managing experience in the minors.
Knorr and Jewitt’s standing tenure with the club and their successes as a minor-league managers make them the presumed frontrunners to take over for Davey Johnson.
Though the in-house candidates are the rumored favorites for the managing vacancy, the Nats have also targeted coaches from outside of the organization. Arizona Diamondbacks third-base coach Matt Williams interviewed for the position on Wednesday, and Padres front-office assistant Brad Ausmus is expected to sit down with the club sometime this week (if he hasn't already).
Hall of Fame shortstop Cal Ripken Jr.‘s name has also cropped up in rumors over the last few weeks, but he hasn’t been formally approached by anyone as of yet.
Once all the first interviews are done, the club plans to narrow its focus down to a few final candidates and do a second round of face-to-face. It’s unclear how long the team is expecting the process to take, but it’s likely they’ll want a new skipper in place before the offseason really kicks off next month.
