Nationals manager hunt: Brad Ausmus interviewed earlier in the week

The Nationals are looking at candidates inside and outside the organization to replace Davey Johnson.

San Diego Padres front office executive Brad Ausmus interviewed for the Nationals manager position earlier in the week, a baseball source confirmed to Bill Ladson of MLB.com.

The Nationals manager position is vacant after Davey Johnson retired at the end of the 2013 season. The team has already conducted a number of interviews from inside and outside the organization; Arizona Diamondbacks third base coach Matt Williams and Nationals bench coach Randy Knorr have also been interviewed.

Ausmus is a former Gold Glove-winning catcher who spent most of his career with the Houston Astros. He was under consideration for the Astros' manager position last season before withdrawing his name from consideration; the job eventually went to Bo Porter. He also interviewed for the open Boston Red Sox position last winter.

Williams and Ausmus have no previous major or minor league managing experience, but both NLCS managers Mike Matheny and Don Mattingly were former players who had zero professional managing experience at the time of their hires.
